Revival Review: Bad Acting Bites Believers

Lately something has become apparent to me.  Namely this:  radical Charismatics will believe almost anything if it contains a modicum of amusement and at least a passing reference to Jesus.  I don’t know what else to conclude when the unabashed showmanship which is being daily displayed in Lakeland Florida passes for a Christian revival.  Is this sort of formulaic hucksterism what Christianity is all about?  If it is, then man oh man I wish I had taken the blue pill.  Don’t get me wrong-I’m not afraid or intimidated by the goings on down South. I would just hate to think that I’d banked my life on a religion which checks its brain at the door in favor of an experience much less enthralling than Bonnaroo (and with a lot crappier music).  I know I haven’t but even the concept is worth a shudder.  By now I’ve watched a good bit of the Lakeland ‘process’ and am beginning to feel as if I’d seen a continuous loop of a bad SNL revival parody  (SNL would have been funnier though and at least the odd knowledge that ‘this is trying to pass as authentic’ doesn’t trouble me in a bad SNL parody).  Really though, it’s not even very good comedy, I mean, the whole ‘Bam’ old-lady-hits-the-floor thing is only funny the first couple of times, and then…wellllll.  You get my point.

With that said, I am not sure that people are being healed at the Lakeland revival.  Yeah I’ve read the testimonies, seen the x-rays, watched the people fall down on stage, and heard all about William Branham’s healing angel.  I am sure that there are many people who are so enamored with the idea of supernatural healing that they think that they must believe that they have been healed or somehow their faith is impure.  I am sure that many people believe that if they say that they have been healed then they will be, eventually.  I am sure that many people have so strongly tied their Christianity to sight and not faith.

By that same token, I am painfully aware that this post touches a deep nerve in the radical Charismatic body. It offends one of their most deeply felt desires, that is for one day, in some meeting, prayer group, worship service, conference, that they will get the ultimate Holy Ghost ‘fix’. This is why so many are spiritual junkies (and I was one of them) on a tireless hunt for that definitive experience which will finally tell them that they have arrived as truly ’spiritual’.  Even so, I must emphatically state that ascended spiritual masters are not Christians. Christians live within an effective and certain hope of a future reality. The ‘Not yet’ aspect of glorification (when we will see Jesus and have the power of glorified bodies) is not within our grasp already. Radical Charismatics miss this tension entirely. They suffer from an over-realized eschatology which drives them in continual attempts to lasso the future and bring it into the present.

The various negative responses that I’ve encountered in my last post, ‘Todd Bentley in His Element’, confirm the existence of this radical Charismatic sore spot.  In exposing Bentley’s beliefs I attack the validity of the current great hope for many radical Charismatics.  Seriously, the fact that Paul Cain and Bob Jones endorse Bentley should be reason enough to take pause.    But that is only secondary to the real issue which is this:  The miracles aren’t the main thing. The belief which is promulgated alongside them is.  Miracles fade faith is staid.  Radical Charismatics are brainwashed into believing that surreptitious show business is what God is ‘really doing now’ through self-appointed super apostles, as opposed to meeting men and women (his children) through the suffering, mundane drudgery, minute joys, and fading mortality of this life.  Baby-steps of faith.  I would like to believe that hour by hour, day by day, we become more like Christ as we move into the purposeful future of our glorification-the time of which He has planned.  That’s simply not fantastic enough-radical Charismatics need some canned excitement.   The normal Christian life is too much about faith and perseverance and repentance, not enough about power and miracles and speaking things into existence.  This dichotomy between conviction and impression spawns a false hope driving its victims to project their desire at the earliest presenting opportunity.  Desire for the spectacular becomes so strong that when it is manufactured in live mockumentary via the Lakeland reality show, ahem, “healing revival”, that the first whiff of the miraculous is enough to cause a frenzy.  The frenzy becomes a melee, and the melee becomes a phenomenon.  Now it is simply too big to discredit.

The Lakeland healing revival will be a footnote in the trainwreck which has become modern and post-modern radical Charismaticism.  Lakeland will end up like Toronto, desperately trying to recapture the ‘move’ of an earlier time.  People will drift away, carried by the high for a time, only to detox hard if they can’t find another fix quickly enough.  Others will come forward and admit to lying about healings, gold teeth, and pins melting out of their legs just like they did at the Airport Vineyard.  Finally, some will be driven out of radical Charismatic practice by the Holy Spirit when the bottom falls out of the experiential entrepreneurship they’ve subjected themselves to.  These will find solace in the beauty of the normal, human existence which the gospel allows for.  Dying daily is not sexy, but it is real.  I’ll take the real thank you.

  • Natrimony-
I could not imagine how it hard it must be to live with the view that pain and suffering, toil and trouble, death and drudgery are somehow unfit for the truly faithful or always outside of God’s will for your life.

All seriousness aside, is there some sort of playbook or school that these leaders go to in order to learn the tricks of the trade or does it just come naturally to some? I ask, because if you have seen the documentary “Marjoe”, there is a long history of hucksters who know the lingo and the hand gestures that get the crowd going.

That said, thanks for the post and for pointing out the danger of false hope.

  • Nat,

Amen. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen, because what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal.

The gospel shines most brightly from within broken jars of clay.

    Peace.

  • Thank GOD, and I mean that with all sincerity, that there are discerning christians still alive, kicking and telling it like it is. But, lets not fall into the same trap of merely spoutting our views and opinions about what the likes of Tood Bentley are doing. Yes it’s false, misleading and down right criminal but, only talking (or writing) about it isn’t going to change or stop it. As Jesus himself said ‘Only by prayer and fasting’……….
So to all those ‘feet on the ground’ christians I suggest we take a leaf out of the true Master’s book and do likewise.

  • Rich,

Are you likening the doings of Bentley to demon possession? That is what Jesus is referring to as being cast out ‘only by prayer and fasting’ in Mark 9.29.

  • Bentley on Finances:

“So when I need a financial breakthrough I don’t just pray and ask God for my financial breakthrough. I go into intercession and become a partner with the angels by petitioning the Father for the angels that are assigned to getting me money: “Father, give me the angels in heaven right now that are assigned to get me money and wealth. And let those angels be released on my behalf. Let them go into the four corners of the earth and gather me money.”

Stop the train, I want to get off.

  • Bill:
I am with you. Anytime someone or some group starts naming new angels and defining their roles–especially when those roles are strictly man-centered and not God-centered–I make like a tree. It reminds me too much like the mormons and their favorite Angel Moroni.

  • Speaking of Bentley and money:

If you give $500/month or a one-time gift of $5000 to Bentley you will get:

Partner seating at FFM conferences (when available) and sometimes partner entrances

Special Partner ONLY sessions and ministry time during conferences (when available)

Jesus - speaking of “partner seating”

    Matthew 23:6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;

  • Bill:
Would you quit trying to muzzle the ox! If a doctor were to perform all of the healings that Mr. Bentley does, that doctor would be probably charging a high premium as well. He has to eat, Bill; Just like Benny Hinn has to have his private jet to go to work. And I am sure that the Special Partners would be willing to give up there seat for someone that proved to be in greater need?!

If I were you I would first go to our Lord in intercession and intimacy to really hear that it is HIM who is showing up. Did Jesus stop doing a work when he returned to the Father? I am saddened by your unbelief…but then we all get what we believe because Jesus said. “If you have faith” so I guess you will experience all you have faith for…which is nothing but working it out in your own strength.
No one is perfect out there in their ministry…we are not Jesus…but don’t negate what the Holy Spirit is doing by looking through the wrong glasses…. You may not get another chance to taste that the Lord is good.

  • Bless you, Herman. Somebody had to say it.

    -Bill

  • >If I were you I would first go to our Lord in intercession and intimacy to really hear that it is HIM who is showing up.<

sigh… i did… i heard something different from the Holy Spirit..

  • Stop the train, I want to get off.

Amen, Bill– I always thought seeking to talk to angels *good or bad ones* was prohibited in Scripture— it must be Ok now.

  • Berean:
    Chapter? Verse?

  • If our country continues to the follow the lead of our allies across the pond, holy spirit hucksters stateside may want to pay attention to what is going down in England.
Apparently, Britain has had a Fraudulent Mediums Act on the books since 1951 under which prosecutors could obtain a criminal conviction of a medium or healer if they could prove an intent to defraud. However, this law is set to be replaced by the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7351199.stm)

Under the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, it will be the healer or medium’s burden to prove that they did not mislead or coerce vulnerable consumers!! Hanne Stinson, the chief executive of The British Humanist Association’s is quoted as saying that: “We hope that the new regulations will make real changes to the current situation, where psychic practitioners are permitted to make completely unsubstantiated claims and to take payment for their services, without fear of legal action… It is high time that this industry is better regulated, with adequate protections for consumers.” Yikes, could you imagine?

In other words, if you are peddling spiritual powers (at least in England for the moment) you may want to watch out or at least stop charging for your services.

Ward, I have hunted this afternoon for the Scripture. I havent pondered in depth on it in a long time and Im thinking back to my days as an early Christian where I heard a sermon on angels.

I believe it was from that sermon where I though that there was a Scripture that was cited that sparked in my memory– but in looking for it I havent found it. I have read scores of Scriptures about angels this afternoon though LOL! And the gist of Scriptures, such as in Acts 1, is telling us not to worship angels.

Im sure talking to those in the Pro-Bentley group would say they do not worship angels but invoke their aid in their walk, etc. Just as Catholics would tell you that they dont worship mary, but they give her a little credit for having a baby. *a little!*

I dont see anyone in Scripture summoning angels *if I have missed somewhere, please correct me* Angels were sent to THEM for a specific mission. As we know in Revelation 22:8-9 John fell down to worship an angel and the angel rebuked him and told him that he’s a mere servant as well.

I think that the overall implication regarding angels is that we arent to seek them out. We are only to pray to God.

Bentley seems to use angels as inercessors to get God to do his bidding.
“Father, give me the angels in heaven right now that are assigned to get me money and wealth. And let those angels be released on my behalf. Let them go into the four corners of the earth and gather me money.”

Jesus Christ is our intercessor, and as far as I know, we cant boss God around like Bentley does in the above ‘prayer’.

Im sorry I thought there was a Scripture specifically speaking of what I was saying– I should have looked before I lept. but as I explained, it seems to be the overall implication of Scripture that we dont seek them out. If they come to us from the Father then thats OK– like Mary, Abraham, Elizabeth. But if these angels are pulling stuff like Bentley says they are— BEWARE!! Im sure angels of darkness can look good too!

  • The source to that quote is actually still on many websites, when he finds out people are starting to expose him he will no doubt try to pull it down or change what he “meant to say” just like Benny Hinn did when he started getting exposed for his doctrines of devils. Until then see the original article here:

“Father, give me the angels in heaven right now that are assigned to get me money”

    http://www.etpv.org/2003/angho.html

Todd Bentley is no more serving the true Jesus, then Muslims serve the true Jesus just because they claim to believe in “Jesus”. There are MANY false Christs AND false prophets and deceivers as the Bible warned there would be. When I watch and read what is going on with Bentley and his ilk it is like watching the twilight zone, I literally sometimes wonder for a second if I am awake or in a dream/watching a movie, and if I really heard him say what he just said. I truly see it as spiritual sorcery. Do all you can to expose his deceptions, his mouth must be stopped for the sake of the true gospel and the true Jesus Christ.

hmmm. i wonder if anyone knows of any angels i can get to pick up my dry cleaning? poor taste i know but i couldn’t resist.

  • Don’t let this creep you out but I think it starts to explain what is possible when sound doctrine is not fully applied.

  • Wow the second video is quite scary (that is if he didn’t secretly pay off everyone in the room prior and its not all a setup which is quite possible too).

If it is true and he didn’t pay those people off as actors, then it again shows that this kind of stuff has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit, and that all sorts of religions do similar things and have similar experiences, and they can even be induced by athiests upon others. It really is scary how we can deceive ourselves into lies if we are not grounded in the sound doctrines of the Bible. Thanks for that vid.

  • After watching that video and seeing other examples I have been thinking that a lot of these hypnotist tricks most certainly are used in their meetings when it comes time to collect cash. Once they put people into a hypnotic trance like state with the trance music and other healing tricks, they can use related hypnotic tricks of suggestions to make people in the audience give any amount of money they suggest to them without it even being questioned.

Its unbelievable what these guys are going to face if they don’t repent of their dark arts.

  • Yebo,
I have been watching Todd Bentley and the meetings that he has been having through the lens of these videos, and quite frankly it breaks my heart. The amount of hyped suggestions that Todd spews forth leaves no room for a Holy Spirit to act because he has covered the bases with repetitive notions that have done the leading, and falsely at that. I ache for the body of Christ that has boughten into this with eyes totally closed. To read what some are saying about how spiritual this is breaks my heart. We are such gullible people who refuse to check out the scriptures for ourselves.

I just had the chance to watch those two videos. You are right, they are scary. I’m not sure they are the result of hynotism, though that is cerainly a possiblity. Similiar things are seen in too many occult settings for me to think there aren’t some other spiritual powers often at work.

After reading everyone’s comments I am really saddened that people are duped by the Todd Bentleys of the world. If I can see through it why can’t they? I guess God has blessed me in that I grew up in a very solid church, received very solid teaching at EI, and continue to be under teaching that is grounded in His Word.

  • Re: the Derren Brown videos.

I’ve seen this guy perform a number of ‘tricks’, perhaps the most interesting is where he plays 9 of the best chess players in the world simultaneously and beats five. This feat was not supernatural, but a very clever mathematical trick. However, his mental powers to pull this trick off are impressive.

But, don’t forget that this guy is an admitted atheist, a homosexual and a stage hypnotist. I can’t totally discount supernatural activity in his videos above. But I can eliminate the Holy Spirit as the source of his power. Given his results, that is the scary thing.

why rob whatever are you implying? are you saying that its possible for an avowed atheist homosexual to be in touch with wonder working supernatural powers? what about the fruit of his supernatural power. i mean a miracle should surely convince us he is legit and atheism is true right? man i wonder if you are even converted. if you cant see that this man is of the god he dont believe in based on the good feelings of the folks present and the miracles he works then the problem is yours. it dont matter what he says it is what he does right?

sorry a bit of sarcasm from the moderator every now and then is good for the soul.

I think you caught the essence of it very well!!

  • TGC,

If I wanted to spout the “company line”, I’d say that Derren Brown has a prophetic gift from God, but that he is choosing to use it in a wrong way. Yea that’s it. He really is part of the end-time generation, but hasn’t figured it out yet.

  • i have a question, although it doest quite pertain to the topic it borders it. does anyone know about bill johnson? My thought is, his (bill johnson) passion, dream, what ever you would call it, is to call people imitate or be a representation of christ in everything we do and in every area of our lives. this is if God blesses me with money, we should us His blessing to bless others.
If you see someone in a wheel chair or on crutches that you should pray for their healing, like Jesus did. that also brings Gods timing into the equation. It might not be Gods plan for someone to be healed in a prayer service or in church. his plan might be for someone to pray for a wheelchair bound person in the middle of wal-mart or in the check-out line. this kind of healing, i believe, is awesome because it takes God and His word and applies it directly to the world. there aren’t the bells and whistles or believes or doctrine or rituals of the church to get in the way. Its just God using a sold out born again Christian to impact His world. what do you think?
we are all human, i am human, we are inclined to make mistakes. Only God nows the mistakes that i have made in my life, but i still believe that as long as i acknowledge my mistakes, With Gods help over come them. He can use me for whatever He wants to do.
i think i got of topic a little bit but, the question remands. does bill Johnson practice what he preaches?
