Where are we?

By Nathaniel

A good question. Many of you are asking or have asked this. I can honestly say that I am not a youth pastor at a PCA church anymore. Now I am a college professor teaching at my alma mater. At the moment I have absolutely no desire to enter “professional ministry”…paychecks=compromise (for me). My friend Jarrod is working on planting a church in Bolivar, Missouri. Devin is growing a family and still chillin’ like an Ashevillian. As far as our relationship to this blog goes we’re mostly retired. I speak for myself when I say it is difficult to carve out the time to do this thing well…the cost/return ratio is on the low end now that my family has grown and time is at a premium. Also, I just have a hard time getting fired up about this stuff anymore. I have become cynical in regard to “The prophetic movement” and all of its offshoots. When I run into someone (pretty infrequently nowadays) who starts spouting the usual taglines I generally am wondering if they’re moments away from foaming at the mouth in order to prove a spiritual point. I smile, wave, and back away. Just like this….

Part II. “The Blueprint Prophecy: Is It Really Up to Code?”

Part II. “The Blueprint Prophecy: Is It Really Up to Code?”
In order to interpret the blueprint prophecy accurately some more preliminary understandings are needed. First, there is nothing wrong or inherently dangerous in a Christian ministry desiring to form a mission statement. This is actually a standard practice. Certainly wise saints, graced with the sanctified common-sense of the Holy Spirit, can compose both God-honoring definitions of faith and doctrinal statements. It is reasonable to also conclude that God is ‘in’ such methods. The document in question may be a very godly standard of practice. However, attaching God’s autograph to the document creates a something that is almost inspired, but not quite. When an individual sets the framework and future of a Christian ministry organization upon a document given by God through men which is not the Scripture then we have what is known as tertium quid, a ‘third kind’.
The ‘third kind’ in this case is neither mission statement nor Scripture, however, it is in effect a blending of both in application. The first line is very telling, “God shall confirm in your spirit; and do not proceed until He does.” The confirmation for this message is to be found from God in the spirit of its readers not in the objective text of Holy Scripture. Now, if someone were to ask me if I agreed with a mission statement ‘in my spirit’ I believe I could provide a fairly honest answer. Certainly I would be more careful and reverent if asked the same about Scripture. But, if I were asked to critique a tertium quid such as the ‘blue print prophecy’ I would definitely hesitate to offer a candid evaluation of the subject matter before examining its presuppositional underpinnings. I believe that brain must engage before the ‘spirit’ in this case.

Now a bystander might say, “Why not, are not the spirits of the prophets subject to the prophets?” “Furthermore, since all have received the spirit of prophecy are you not qualified to judge also?” My reply to such a question would be a careful analysis of the verse applied, in this case 1 Corinthians 14:32. The overarching context of this verse is Paul’s message of self-control to the gift zealous Corinthians. The immediate context of 1 Cor.14:32 deals with the ordered giving of ‘tongues’ and ‘prophecies’ preceded by a more specific list of the forms which ‘prophecy’, or ‘preaching the message of God’, took on in the various meetings (giving of psalms, teachings, revelations). Paul is telling the eager proclaimers to wait their turn. In so doing he assures them that the spirit that wants to get up and proclaim, a very real desire, is actually under their control—it is subject to them. The Greek word pneumata—the accusative of πνευμα—is also readily translated as ‘self’ or ‘disposition’. The context certainly allows that rendering in this case since Paul’s entire point is one of self-control.

This is all to say that our task as Christians, from this specific verse, is to be controlled in our preaching the message of God and especially controlled when speaking on His behalf. Paul’s teaching here is certainly not that ‘we all have the subjective ability to decide for ourselves whether a proclamation is from God or not’. How does one judge that a ‘third kind’ of directional statement has been confirmed by God other than through the Scriptures? Perhaps the framers of the blueprint prophecy presuppose this necessity. However, that presupposition, to my knowledge, has not been expressly set.

By this understanding it is safe to say that the bible is definitely from God. Any pastor will relate that a task of individual interpretation of the Bible can often be confusing enough without adding the extra burden of interpreting ‘third kinds’. The idea that each believer should individually judge a prophetic utterance according to the confirmation ‘they feel in their spirit’ is simply un-biblical. Granted, the blueprint prophecy was delivered to the leadership of IHOP prior to its wider circulation. However, to my knowledge, there has been no standard methodology revealed from IHOP for how, to what extent, and why it was edited. What criteria did they use to o.k. this ‘third kind’ of direction which falls outside of the bible. And when they posted it on their website the edited version still lacks clarity for the general reader. Why is it printed in a way similar to prophetic portions of our English literal translations with line separation and even a hanging indent? Perhaps this an accident, but it certainly is a curious one if it is.

Well, with this paltry offering, I hope to foster vibrant dialogue on these matters at the very least. I am realizing that a thorough, point-by-point, examination of the blue print prophecy will be no small work. Perhaps our readership will grant me the time needed to address its contents over a period of time. If not, then hopefully they will study this document on their own time and perhaps bring their observations to bear in a helpful way to the ongoing discussion.

The IHOP Blueprint Prophecy: Is It Up To Code?

After learning of the blueprint prophecy I debated internally upon its implications and decided to examine it for our readership. Perhaps many of you are already familiar with this document. I’ve reprinted it in full at the end of this article, just as I’ve received it, complete with links to With that said, let the legend begin.
Once upon a time a voice came and spoke to a man. The man accepted that voice as God’s. He was so convinced that this message was delivered via divine transmission that he tape-recorded it and hopped in his car (I want the vehicle to be a truck and the man to be a farmer, it just makes a better story—more archetypal, but…). With precious cargo in hand our sojourner drove a vast distance to the dwelling place of a famous prophet where he believed the message would be received and applied. As fate would have it the chief prophet had already garnered word of this message’s existence and content. The mysterious declaration (after some editing by Mike Bickle—the ‘architect’ of the blueprint prophecy) eventually became one of the doctrinal pillars of the Neo-Montanist outpost which is known as IHOP. In this way the ‘blueprint prophecy’ came to be included in the canon of the Neo-Montanist writings, alongside ‘The Final Quest’, ‘The Greys vs. the Blues’, among others.
Well. Quite a story. It almost could be biblical. However, is it? The history behind the blueprint prophecy reads more like a modern-day urban legend. This is to be expected. Post-Modern youth long for a supernatural, mystical, spiritualistic something to break the boredom of status quo existence and transport them into transcendence. The longing to be a part of a grand saga is (un)fortunately hardwired into the soul of humankind.
Sadly, humans often look outside of reality for the sweeping adventure they so desperately need for fulfillment. Post-Modernism itself is mostly a denial of reality. While rationalism is not sacred it does offer a more solid basis for knowing, discerning, and evaluating information. If experiential fiction can be relied upon as an authentic standard for truth claims then there is simply no basis for comparison. No individual experience may be evaluated by any other standard than that of the ‘experiencer’s’ own disposition. Bear with me, I will return to the blueprint prophecy. However, the epistemology (how they know what they know) of the Neo-Montanist movement is readily seen in this document. I simply cannot pass up an opportunity to expose it.
With that said, and working from this foundation, it is easy to see that the blueprint prophecy is not biblical in the truest sense. It is biblical in the sense that it cites biblical quotations as support for its message, however, The Watchtower (a Jehovah’s Witness key publication) does just as much. In the weeks to come I plan to address this document systematically…proving that it is elitist, extra-biblical, sub-apocryphal, and that a foundation built to these specs might appear structurally sound when that is hardly the case. To be continued…

Friends of the Bridegroom
God shall confirm in your spirit; and do not proceed until He does. Upon the
confirmation you should begin to act immediately to take the bride to the city; to
the city of Kansas City, rather than having the city come to Him.
Therefore there should be another…on the north side and on the east side and on
the west side, even as it is on the south side. Therefore there shall be four…. I
have shown you My grace. My grace is sufficient. My grace is Me in you and in
this shall be the 5-fold ministry.
In days past, I have said…You are a Garden Center…of My choice says the Lord.
In My Garden Center…I shall raise up…plants of renown… it shall be known, and
the ways shall be renown. I will bring and place…those that will be the caretakers
of My (Garden Center…). You shall be a dresser of My vineyard, says the Lord,
and the vineyard shall be these people that I shall bring unto you and out of you.
Even out of the loins of the blood line of the flesh of Abraham–even as I said
there would be many seeds and many nations, kindred, and tongues… I shall
raise up and there shall flow forth many sons and daughters. They shall be known
and renowned. Even as the children of the renowned – shall they be. These
children shall flow out of…My Spirit. They shall be spiritual children and they
shall inhabit the uttermost parts of the earth. They shall inhabit the place that I
have called for you to settle and to raise up other ministries and to send out.
You shall set in order…as I call the signals—you shall only be acting as I send in
the signals to you. As I give you the word of My messengers, you shall hear and it
shall be confirmed as a truth in your heart and you shall act upon it.
Upon the acting of this, I will place within you and within your hands the 5-fold
ministry. The ministry shall flow and rotate…You shall set in as I will call and
place in your hands to anoint with the Holy Oil – the significance of My acceptance
of those whom I shall confirm by My Holy Spirit….that I would…prepare for Me
a bride in this area. The people shall flow then into the tabernacles of habitation.
They shall flow from the North, the East, the South and the West. They shall come
and they shall be dandled by their sides… You shall be ministers of light and
ministers of truth of Me, says the Lord. Even this shall be a people that shall be
known of Me and I shall be their God and they shall be My people. Their
responsibility lies within Me and their safety lies within drawing close together.
Yes, I would have them draw real close together. I say unto you again, that their
Friends of the Bridegroom
safety lies in drawing real close together. There shall be unity of the Spirit and of
the doctrine. Your doctrine shall be My doctrine – byMy Spirit.
I will prepare a place for My people. You shall go forth and lead My people to a
place of habitation. I will show you and I will guide you. I will be your purse
bearer. I will hand the checks and the money as the time is prepared for this.
There shall be a time and a season and a place for My people to go. Even as I shall
call them forth before the cities become desolate. You shall raise up…other
cities that shall be the permanent place. There shall be schools of ministry. They
shall flow out of the city into the country–into the country, into the City of
Habitation; says the Lord.
This load shall be too heavy for you. You shall not be able to bear the burden
alone. I shall raise up helpmates, yes, even many help-mates both male and
female. I will set them and call them to stand by your side. You shall go forth and
lead a people even as Moses led a people and there shall be those that shall lift up
your hands. You shall consecrate this people…and assign and delegate. I would
have you to delegate the authority, duty, and responsibility, because you cannot
carry this load yourself. The burden is too heavy and the journey is too far.
I will send wise men even as I sent wise men to behold My Son’s birth, so shall I
send wise men to teach you, help you, guide, you and to be a strength and a source
of supply to you. I shall be your purse bearer. I shall raise up ministers of
finance in this area. To those that will hear My voice, yield, become obedient and
truly do as My word says by setting the Kingdom first in their heart – I shall bless
them. I shall cause them to prosper and they will be prospering because it is. They
will remember and know that of a truth that it is their Lord and their God that
gives them power to get wealth (Deut. 8:18). They shall prosper when there is
no prosperity and bear fruit when others are barren. Your land and your habitation
shall be a place of a forerunner – you shall go before hand. Even as I sent Joseph
before hand, so shall you go before….you shall send forth the Joseph out of My
bride and My congregation to prepare–even to make ready a time and a place that I
shall choose, it shall be of My choosing and of My calling, says the Lord.
I shall visit you. There shall be many that shall raise up out of you and you shall be
known in your ministries. From out of you, shall come forth the 5-fold ministry.
This ministry shall be known and established…I shall move quickly. I will do a
Friends of the Bridegroom
quick work in teaching and in bringing up these people that must be brought up.
Yes, this must be a “do-work,” and a new work. As I open My hand–even out of
the clouds, even as I have shown you and I shall show you that – as My hand opens
and pulsates so shall the children grow mightily and quickly.
I shall bring them up, teach them and lead them by the right way that they might go
and prepare a City for Habitation – they will plant their vineyards and sow their
fields. Their cattle shall give their increase, says the Lord. For even as I have sent
My messengers and many have heard the voice…I have, shot the arrow of My
deliverance for My people. The arrow is the flaming arrow of My deliverance of
My gospel and of My power.
The Out-Pouring of the Latter Rain shall be released in this area and upon this city.
It shall be noised abroad even world-wide. They will stand in awe and will return
unto the Holy reverence of My Name and of My people. They shall flourish. The
way of My teachings shall be by My Spirit and MyWord. I will do a new thing.
I will visit them in the night season with dreams and visions as I have said in My
Word. I will even send My angels. I will take people in the Spirit and catch
them away in the Spirit…it shall be by Me and I shall teach them in new ways.
My Word shall not return unto me void but that thing which I have said is absolute,
My Word is absolute. My Word is sovereign. My Word is established. My Word
shall be. If there be those that are stubborn, rebellious and obstinate, I shall
remove the Royal Diadem and the Crown of Glory and I shall give it to another,
says the Lord. This is the day of My visitation unto you. I shall call the recording
angels of Heaven and earth to record to you, this day that it is sealed upon you and
it cannot be removed, in Jesus’ mighty name.
For you shall not build unto Me or unto yourself buildings of places to in-gather.
You shall continue with the plan as I have given you in the beginning. For it is My
plan. It shall be by My design, and shall not be by groping as in the dark – for My
people that have been sitting in the valley and shadow of darkness have seen the
Even as Paul had seen the light, but his fellow-laborers saw not the light, but he
became the reflection of that light even as John bore witness of that light. For it is
Friends of the Bridegroom
given unto you, to know and to see the Just One (Acts 22:12-14). For I have many
people that must yet come to the light. My light is understanding.
For out of the center of the Hub – it shall grow forth from the House of Prayer.
For I have said My House shall be called a “House of Prayer”. For this is of Me.
The fifth shall be My grace. For out of My grace shall flow forth grace and favor
to all that are willing and obedient. For have I not said the first shall be last and
the last shall be first. Thus it shall be as the fifth place of ministry is to be readied-
-then it shall be built by My design.
For into this place shall flow the outreach ministries and from these in-gathering
meetings shall flow the fullness of Christ…the workings of the fullness of the gifts
of the Holy Ghost. For when you have the nine gifts come together, then shall be
fulfilled the scripture, “these works and even greater works shall you do.”
There are the many that shall be raised up at the appointed time for the world to
see. This is a part of the ministry of the End-Time Church. For even as I have
called John to make ready a people for the Lord, even so this will…bear the
forerunner spirit that was upon John. This shall be a spirit of preparation and of
preparedness, for this is the separation work. For I have called for My people to
come out and be separate–even unto Me. For I will not have a piece of a people:
but it shall be all or none. For, I place in your hands the final decision and you
shall go forth by faith. Faith is by My grace and in My grace is My tolerance and
contingency for flesh.
For the government shall be by the voice of twelve. For disciples shall be sent
out… They shall go as servants into the out-of-the-way places to compel them to
come in to My House that it may be full. For this shall move to the outer borders
of the city for the final phases of the building of My “House of Prayer

Is There Anything Comparable?

Well, now that Perry is out of the race I guess it’s time to at least update the front page post. For awhile now we’ve been EXTREMELY sporadic about interacting with this blog. What I am wondering is…does a blog now exist which is comparable to either ‘The Sign of Jonah’ or ‘The Greycoats’ when either was up and running full tilt. Is there a blog/site which is regularly exposing, tackling, and generally harassing the prophetic pretenders and other neo-Montanist types of our fair land. I await your replies…

OT Prophecy…What Does it Mean in the NT?

Awww….yeah.  Starting a series on biblical prophecy…the prophecy that counts ya’ll.

How we interpret OT prophecy, and more specifically, how OT prophecy is interpreted in the NT, flavors our entire outlook concerning contemporary Christian goals and future Christian realities.   A redemptive history gains momentum as Scripture progresses toward consumation of creation in the new heavens and new earth.  This movement is catalyzed by God through his son Jesus Christ.  I submit, that if we hold this focus when reading prophetic literature we will avoid distraction and ‘bogging down’.  We will be comforted by the greater redemptive historical context of the Bible as opposed to our own ability to read contemporary signs which affirm prophetic prediction.  Although some prophecy is clearly predictive, the weight of it is pedagogical.  The OT prophets quoted each other.  Jesus quoted the OT prophets.  The NT writers quoted the OT prophets.  The majority of Revelation correlates with passages in Ezekiel, Daniel, and Zechariah.  We will examine certain key passages in the gospels, epistles, and apocalyptic literature of the NT which directly quote the OT.

A question:  Do you believe that OT prophecy finds fulfillment in specific current events of our time…such as hurricane Katrina, global warming, political leadership, etc.??

It Is Written, A Defense of Sola Scriptura

Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:12-21 ESV

In this passage, Peter is asserting that in order to get the straight facts about Christ and the faith, we are to look to the ones who were “eye-witnesses of his majesty” (v.16). Then we see Peter speaking of “the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place”. Clearly that says we are to look to Scripture, in this case, the Old Testament, in order to see truth in the midst of lies. The lamp shining in a dark place is indicative of seeing truth in the midst of lies, we are to cling to that which is light, in this case, the prophecies of Christ e.g. the Old Testament. As Peter says this, he of course speaks from the same authority that he gives to that of the Old Testament. For who is he to give such instructions about clinging to the Old Testament if he is not also being carried along by the Holy Spirit? Much less, he walked with Christ Himself, and he is attesting to his own authority. Furthermore, we find more from Peter in chapter 3, which speaks of Paul’s words as Scripture also:

Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

2 Peter 3:14-18 ESV

We see in this passage that Paul’s writings are also to be considered as Scripture. So, we have Peter saying that the Church should take heed the ones who walked with Christ himself (Peter, John, James, Matthew, Mark, Jude). We do not know who the author of Hebrews is, or if he was an eye-witness or not, but we do know of his association with Timothy. This adds to build a strong foundation for why Hebrews is canonical. Hebrews is doctrinally sound according to the rest of Scripture, and it’s author was associated with Timothy, a disciple of Paul:

You should know that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I shall see you if he comes soon.

Hebrews 13:23 ESV

Then we have Paul, Luke who were definitely not eyewitnesses. Paul’s epistles are obviously to be treated as Scripture, as shown above. Then we have Paul’s own affirmation that he should be read as Scripture:

For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:11-13 ESV

Paul says that his words did not come from human wisdom, but by the Spirit. Now that has been established, let’s see what Paul says about Scripture itself:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

In essence, these two verses show that all that a man of God needs in order to be competent and equipped for every good work is Scripture. Yet Rome teaches that people need more than Scripture in order to be competent and equipped for every good work. This is demonstrated in their reliance on “tradition” as equal to that of Scripture. These traditions are said to be what the Apostles themselves passed on, but if this is true, then why did Paul seem to not address it in 2 Timothy 3?

Paul does mention the word “tradition” three times in the New Testament regarding church traditions:

Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.

1 Corinthians 11:2 ESV

So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 ESV

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

2 Thessalonians 3:6 ESV

So, what are the traditions spoken of? Let’s start with 1 Corinthians 11:2. Here Paul says that the Corinthians have kept the traditions that he delivered to them. Specifically what he delivered to them is spoken of in v.23-25 of the same chapter:

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

1 Corinthians 11:23-25 ESV

That mention of tradition obviously isn’t that of the extra-biblical ones that Rome speaks of.

Lets examine 2 Thessalonians 2:15. Paul passed on doctrinal traditions and practical ones by his own word and by epistles. (Romans 6:17; 1 Corinthians 11:2,23; 2 Timothy 1:13). Paul equates the traditions that he passed on with Scripture, does that seem to in any way imply that there are traditions that we must know that are not in Scripture itself? Why would Paul omit things of such importance?

Finally, we see 2 Thessalonians 3:6, this is easily demonstrated that the tradition that Paul passed onto them was that they should not be idle in their work. There is certainly no mention of the extra-biblical traditions that Rome espouses.

Now, do we see Papal infallibility in these? What about purgatory? What about the assumption of Mary, or her Immaculate Conception? What about Mary’s sinlessness? None of these you will find in Scripture, and the verses that speak of church tradition do not warrant the belief that they were referring to the traditions of Rome. Again, if these were essentials for our Christian life, why would they not be in Scripture? In light of 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Scripture is all that we need when it comes to instruction on Godliness and right doctrine. That includes the Church as an institution and it’s functionings, as that is a matter of good instruction.

Let us not forget how Christ responded to the Pharisees, and even Satan himself, with Scripture.

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,

lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God

and him only shall you serve.’”

Matthew 4:5-10 ESV

“It is written…” – Jesus
